The Organization for Competitive Markets is calling for the breakup of the Big Four meatpacking companies, Cargill, National Beef, JBS, and Tyson. OCM Interim Executive Director Ben Gotschall says back in 1902, 6 packers controlled 50 percent of the market, now the packer concentration problem is much worse practically eliminating the cash market.
He says captive supply which is packers owning their own cattle is a major part of the problem and that needs to be banned.
Gotschall says there are several entities that could push forward a breakup of those big four meat packing companies.
Gotschall says OCM also wants to see mandatory country of origin labeling reinstated and a moratorium placed on all mega ag company mergers.
