Organization for Competitive Markets leaders want their membership to ask President-elect Donald Trump and the new Congress for their support of the new GIPSA rules. OCM President Mike Weaver says the interim final rule and proposed rules in the Farmer Fair Practice Rules from USDA provide common sense protections for ag producers.
He says opponents to the GIPSA rules want President-elect Trump to include them with all the other federal regulations he wants to overturn.
Weaver says many of the agricultural groups have aligned with OCM in backing the GIPSA Farmer Fair Practice Rules.
The interim final rule clarifies that not all violations of the Packers and Stockyards Act require proof of harm or likely harm to competition. The second rule is a proposed regulation outlawing the system that unfairly, unjustly or discriminately compensates a poultry grower. The third proposed rule establishes criteria to protect the legal rights of farmers in contracts.
