Last week, U.S. Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), introduced the Ocean Shipping Reform Act, this legislation would update federal regulations for the global shipping industry. This bill would make it harder for ocean carriers to unreasonably refuse goods ready to export at ports, and it would give the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) greater rulemaking authority to regulate harmful practices by carriers. Executive Director of the South Dakota Pork Producers Council Glenn Muller says that they are in full support of this bill.
He also noted the effects that delayed shipping has on producers and the pork industry.
Senator Thune stated that “this legislation would also benefit consumers by promoting the fluidity and efficiency of the supply chain.”
