The leader of the National Pork Producers Council is disappointed the Obama administration has given up on getting Congress to approve the Trans Pacific Partnership during the lame duck session. This follows Donald Trump’s victory and word Republican leaders would not consider TPP in the remainder of Obama’s term. NPPC President John Weber says, however, they aren’t giving up on getting the deal passed sometime in the future.
He says they will work with the Trump administration on any changes to existing trade agreements and any future trade deals. Weber says besides Congress, his group will work with the new Vice President and other members of the transition team to educate them about the importance of these trade pacts.
A spokesman for U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman said Friday the final step on TPP is for Congress to take.
The 2016 election season has shown that globalization and trade concerns beat out the appetite for these types of trade deals.
