The Obama administration is filing an enforcement action against China at the World Trade Organization on unfair trade practices over corn, wheat and rice. U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman announced the action today.
Froman says the U.S. has filed 23 cases at the WTO over trade distorting actions with 14 of those against China. He says China’s domestic support policies have hurt U.S. farmers.
Senate Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts of Kansas says China needs to play by the same trade rules as other WTO countries.
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says China’s policies and violations of WTO Commitments is costing the U.S. wheat industry $ 700 million a year. He says China is projected to be the largest trade partner for the U.S. going from $ 2 Billion a year in 2001 to $ 20 Billion plus this year.
