The number of food companies planning to transfer to cage free eggs continues to grow. Kroger, Albertsons and Delhaize America have joined Kraft, Heinz and Schwan’s in their effort to be cage free by 2025. HSUS Vice President of Farm and Animal Protection Paul Shapiro says food companies understand that keeping hens in cages is cruel and inhumane.
HSUS Ag Director Joe Maxwell says the food companies are being influenced by consumers who are demanding these changes in agricultural practices.
Maxwell says the move toward cage free is not due to HSUS putting undue pressure on the food companies.
Kroger officials says their goal is to transition to a 100-percent cage free egg supply by 2025. They add that in 2015, 15-percent of their eggs were already cage free. Delhaize America officials say they may be cage free ahead of their 2025 goal.
