The Center for Food Safety has asked a federal court to review EPA’s recent approval of the insecticide sulfoxaflor. They want the EPA to set aside recently restored uses of the insecticide. National Sorghum Producers CEO Tim Lust says the product is an important tool for growers in controlling sugarcane aphid which can damage sorghum. He says the petition filing on insecticides is becoming common practice.
He says sulfoxaflor has gone through several regulatory approvals and always proven to be a safe product.
Lust says there are not a lot of alternative insecticides that can be used to control sugar cane aphid and protect sorghum, so it’s critical sulfoxaflor remain available for use.
The Center for Food Safety is arguing the EPA violated its duties under the Endangered Species Act by failing to consult with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or the National Marine Fisheries Service.
