The ongoing drought in South and North Dakota has some livestock producers looking for alternative feed sources and cover crops be a solution. Natural Resources Conservation Service Regional Soil Health Specialist Stan Boltz says producers should consider different options before purchasing any feed.
He says planting a cover crop may be a good consideration, although that’s also dependent upon getting some rain.
Boltz says producers can contact their local NRCS office for help in selecting cover crops specifically for grazing.
Boltz also advises producers consult with their crop insurance agent before deciding to plant cover crops.
