The National Pork Producers Council is working with the Obama Administration to strengthen trade ties with Argentina and get that market opened for U.S pork. NPPC’s Dave Warner says the U.S. already has free trade deals with all the other Latin American countries and Argentina would be a great addition.

He says President Obama believes the first step to opening the Argentinian market is through a trade and investment framework agreement or TIFA, which could eventually lead to a free trade agreement. Warner says NPPC is also partnering with the USDA to open that market.

Warner says having an FTA in place allows lowering or elimination of tariffs. He says the U.S. already has those deals in place with other Latin American nations.

Last week, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker met with Argentina’s Minister of Production Francisco Cabrera talking about increasing trade possibilities between the two countries.
