There is an extreme shortage of pork in the Philippines and that has compelled their government to look at expanding the quota for pork imports. National Pork Producers Council’s Director of International Affairs Maria Zieba says they’ve been in discussions with Philippines officials and are glad to see this move to allow more U.S. pork in.
She says there’s a lot of pork consumed in the Philippines and having increased quotas and less tariffs is a positive development for America’s pork producers.
Zieba says NPPC is working to gains markets for U.S. pork in more Pacific Rim countries and also wants to rejoin the TPP now known as the CPTPP trade pact.
The current minimum access volume in the Philippines is 54,000 metric tons and the country’s initial proposal increased that to 164,000 metric tons.
