Today, the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement is scheduled to get underway. National Pork Producer Council’s Vice President and Counsel for Global Government Affairs Nick Giordano says it’s imperative zero tariff levels are maintained in whatever final agreement is worked out between the three countries.

He says it’s a good move to modernize the agreement and upgrading sanitary, phytosanitary measures would also be positive.

Giordano says while negotiators want to move quickly on an agreement, it likely will take some time to complete.

Giordano says the Mexicans would like to get NAFTA redone by next July with their elections coming up., however that may not be feasible.
