Several House members along with the National Pork Producers Council are asking Thailand to remove its restrictions on imports of U.S. farm products including pork. NPPC’s Director of International Relations Maria Zieba says Thailand for decades has denied access to U.S. pork putting up non scientific barriers.

She says the Trump administration and USTR are currently reviewing Thailand’s eligibility for the U.S Generalized System of Preferences because of the country’s failure to provide access for U.S. products including pork.

Zieba says NPPC will be appearing an upcoming hearing asking the U.S. to remove Thailand from the GSP if they continue denying access to U.S. pork.

Zieba says the market potential for U.S pork in Thailand is roughly $20 million per year and includes mostly the parts of the hog that U.S. consumers don’t eat, which is the offal.
