The National Pork Producers Council wants the oversight of livestock gene editing to be handled by the USDA and not by the Food and Drug Administration. NPPC’s Jim Monroe says the USDA has the proper framework to handle that important technology while the FDA’s oversight is weildy and expensive.
He says the U.S. is trailing other countries who have advanced further with their own livestock gene editing.
Monroe says gene editing promises significant animal health benefits for America’s livestock producers.
Monroe says it only makes sense for oversight of livestock gene editing to be handled by the USDA. He says they understand agriculture and have the proper framework already in place to ensure food safety.
