NPPC Trying To Get Peru And Chile To Remove Trade Barrier

U.S. Pork officials are working to get Peru and Chile to drop their testing requirements of chilled pork for trichinae. National Pork Council’s Vice President and Counsel for International Affairs Nick Giordano says the U.S. has a free trade agreement with both Peru and Chile and both are involved in the U.S. in TPP talks. He’s hoping that can be used for an avenue to reach a solution to this trade barrier.
Giordano says there’s no health issue with trichinae in U.S. pork, that Peru and Chile are putting up a non tariff trade barrier with it.
Giordano says just last year the U.S. was able to get Colombia to drop its barriers to U.S. chilled pork.
