President Obama has been meeting with various Pacific Rim country leaders and is pushing for approval of the Trans Pacific Partnership Trade Deal. NPPC President and Iowa pork producer John Weber says many of the countries involved in TPP are starting to approve the deal in their own countries. He believes there is an opportunity during the lame duck session of Congress to get U.S. approval.
U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman says the TPP is projected to boost the U.S. economy by $ 4.4 Billion annually. Weber says the U.S. can’t afford to turn that down and must not be isolated from the rest of the world.
He says if the U.S. doesn’t approve TPP, China and other countries will trade with those TPP members and the U.S. will be shut out of those markets.
Weber says it’s important U.S. agriculture groups get united and push their members of Congress to approve TPP during the lame duck session.
