National Pork Producer Council leaders are taking issue with legislation introduced by Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley to ban packer ownership of livestock. NPPC President and Iowa pork producer John Weber says its important livestock producers have access to the market.
He says several states already allow packers to own livestock and that has not hurt their access to the market.
Weber says while its true there’s been concentration in the livestock industry, pork producers can still overcome that by contracting their hogs.
Weber says he intends to review the text of Senator Grassley’s bill when it becomes available.
