China which is expected to import a record amount of pork from the United States this year may be buying even more. That’s due to recent flooding that drowned thousands of their own hogs. One Chinese village alone reported roughly 10,000 hogs drowning. National Pork Producers Council President John Weber says being able to sell more U.S. pork to China comes at a good time.
He says the Chinese are trying to deal with losses to their own domestic pork production and they’re also being impacted by feed grain losses.
Weber says the U.S. has an advantage in selling pork to China and could be in a position to capitalize on that market for a number of years.
About a third of China’s pork production has been impacted by the recent flooding.
