The National Pork Producers Council is applauding reintroduction of federal legislation that would identify barriers to the transportation of livestock. The Modernizing Agricultural Transportation Act would establish a working group to reform Hours of Service and Electronic Logging Device Rules. Nebraska Pork Producers Association President Tim Chancellor says the measure provides for safety on the roads and safety for livestock.

He says the current Hours of Service and ELD rules make it difficult for those transporting livestock and this legislation would fix that.

Chancellor says the original Hours of Service and ELD rules had unintended consequences for livestock shippers.

Under the Modernizing Agricultural Transportation Act, within 120 days of receiving the working group’s report, the Transportation Secretary would have to propose regulatory changes to the Hours of Service and ELD rules based on the group’s findings and recommendations.
