South Africa has loosened trade restrictions and now is accepting most U.S. pork in to its country. Dave Warner with the National Pork Producers Council says further opening of that market is beneficial for America’s pork producers.
He says the recent opening will hopefully eventual lead to full market opening for U.S. product.
Warner says South Africa had been granted trade preference through what’s known as AGOA benefits which meant they were able to ship their products duty free. He says the Obama administration pressured them by saying those would be denied and that helped lead to the recent U.S. market opening.
The Loosening of U.S. pork restrictions along with recent openings to U.S. beef in South Africa is seen as major market break through by U.S. trade officials.
