This week the New York State Legislature decided not to take up legislation brought forward by HSUS and other animal activists to ban gestation stalls for sows. The National Pork Producers Council is hailing their decision. Spokesman Dave Warner says the New York Legislature’s decision follows 41 other states that have taken similar stances.
Warner says had the legislation been approved it would have bankrupted many producers.
He says many New York pork operations are run by smaller producers and had the measure been passed not only would have hurt them but consumers as well.
Warner says this recent decision means whatever system a pork producer chooses, whether it be gestation stalls, group pens or anything else as long as good husbandry is practiced it’s o.k.
