The National Pork Producers Council is asking its members to comment against new organic animal welfare standards proposed by the USDA. NPPC President John Weber says the animal welfare proposal doesn’t fit into the definition of organic and doesn’t belong in federal law.

He says if the rule is adopted it will drive up costs for the organic industry as well all farmers.

Weber also says it’s not right to have the feds define what animal welfare is, which is what would happen if the rule is adopted.

Weber says the rule could also be broadened to include all livestock production methods.
