NPPC Officials Say Impossible Pork Is Impossible

The National Pork Producers Council has called out Impossible Foods for misnaming its plant-based products designed to mimic real pork as Impossible Pork. National Pork Producer Council’s Director of Science and Technology Dr. Dan Kovich says pork can only come from a pig, so this is a blatant violation of labeling law.

He says the law prohibits Impossible Foods and other companies from using words to redefine pork or use the term to label a plant base or cell cultured protein alternative without making it clear how they were made.

Kovich says labeling needs to be truthful to avoid consumer confusion.

Kovich says NPPC supports consumer choice and competitive markets on a level playing field. He says accordingly, plant-based and cell-cultured products designed to mimic real meat must face the same stringent regulatory requirements as livestock agriculture including truthful labeling standards.
