The Congressional Research Service is looking into whether President Trump can legally withdraw the U.S. from NAFTA. National Pork Producers Council’s Director of International Affairs Maria Zieba says whether or not he can do that is in question, but withdrawing from the agreement would hurt the U.S.

The President has threatened to withdraw from NAFTA as a way to get Congress to ratify the USMCA and she says approval is needed as soon as possible.

Zieba says even if some members of Congress want changes to the USMCA, they can’t be done due to Trade Promotion Authority rules.

Zieba says NPPC’s main priority is for the U.S. to remove the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs that have hampered U.S. trade and kept the USMCA from being ratified.
