National Pork Producers Council officials are monitoring the latest outbreak of African Swine Fever in China. NPPC Chief Veterinarian Dr. Liz Wagstrom says ASF is one of the three major diseases her group is concerned with along with foot and mouth disease and classical swine fever. She says what’s most concerning is that there’s no way to prevent African Swine Fever if it were to show up in the United States.
She says NPPC has been working with the USDA in asking for stepped up inspections.
Wagstrom says they’re also advising America’s pork producers to enhance their biosecurity measures.
Wagstrom advises producers to work closely with their nutritionists to make sure they’ve properly assessed their feed sources for any possible risks of contracting African Swine Fever.
