President Obama while in China this week at the Asia Pacific conference is pushing world leaders to break logjams holding back an agreement in the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal. Leaders have not yet set a timetable for finalizing the pact. National Pork Producers Council President Dr. Howard Hill says taking more time will put more pressure on Japan to lower their tariffs.
Hill says one of the keys to the TPP agreement is getting rid of the gate price because that allows the Japanese to push their tariffs higher thus negatively impacting U.S. pork going into Japan.
Obama has made the TPP a centerpiece of his efforts to boost U.S. economic investment in Asia which he says is the fastest growing and most dynamic region in the world economically.
