The World Trade Organization has ruled several import restrictions imposed by Argentina in recent years violate global trade rules. The ruling favors the United States, European Union and Japan which brought the complaint against Argentina. National Pork Producer Councils Vice President for trade Nick Giordano says his group is hoping the ruling will lead to Argentina opening its market to U.S. pork.
Giordano says the crux of the argument against Argentina is that for years it has had credit problems and difficulties paying for its imports. He says because of that they set up a list of trade barriers that went against WTO rules.
United States Trade Representative Michael Froman called the WTO decision a victory for fairness and openness in the global economy and a big win for the U.S..
