Trans Pacific Partnership trade negotiators began talks in Ottawa, Canada last week and are talking up until July 12. Japan’s Chief Negotiator says progress is being made however the National Pork Producers Council insists that Japan come down on their tariffs as well as loosen their safeguard requirements in order to reach a successful deal. NPPC President Dr.Howard Hill says U.S. lawmakers back them in their stance in the talks.
Hill says NPPC wants Japan as part of that 12 nation agreement but not on their terms only if they’ll agree to what other countries have agreed to.
Hill says if Japan would come to the table, in the long run the TPP agreement would still benefit them.
