The National Pork Producer Council is expressing concerns about USDA regulations on the buying and selling of livestock and poultry. The Farmer Fair Practice rules involving two proposed rules and one final interim rule have been sent to the Office of Management and Budget. NPPC CEO Neil Dierks says what’s been sent to OMB is revisions of rules first proposed in 2010.
He says his group isn’t clear on what the final rule will be once it’s published.
Dierks says while the proposed rules and interim rules may give a producer an opportunity to have their day in court against a packer who treats them unfairly it also leads to possible unintended consequences.
While NPPC and NCBA both have concerns with what’s been sent to OMB, the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association is commending the move to USDA to send the proposed rules and interim rule forward.
