Officials with the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service say the Japan-European Union trade agreement threatens U.S. pork exports to Japan. Jim Monroe with the National Pork Producers Council says the U.S. is losing market share since abandoning the Trans Pacific Partnership deal.

He says without being engaged in the TPP the U.S. must go forward with a bilateral trade deal with Japan in order not to be shut out of that market.

Monroe says by having their trade deal with Japan the European Union is now and in the future will see significant market gains.

Monroe says since the Japan-EU agreement includes a volume based safeguard for E.U. pork imports that will be phased in over 11 years, it’s critical the U.S. get moving quickly on its own bilateral pact with Japan.
