Tuesday, National Pork Producers Council CEO Neil Dierks testified on the No Regulation Without Representation Act. He told the House Subcommittee on Regulation Reform and Commercial and Antitrust Law there is a growing problem of states regulating beyond their borders. He says it started with states like California banning gestation crates, but the issue has broadened to other production practices, which is hurting pork producers.

He says NPPC is backing Wisconsin Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner’s legislation, which would stop states from adopting regulations or imposing taxes that ban the sale of out-of-state products that don’t meet their criteria.

Dierks says some of these state laws, which negatively impact interstate commerce, are limiting pork production.

Dierks says having mandated state laws without any associated economic incentive for producers to change production practices hampers niche markets.
