This week, National Pork Producers Council’s Director of International Afffairs Maria Zieba testified at a U.S. Trade Representatives hearing regarding the lack of market access for U.S. pork in Thailand. She says Thailand has a defacto ban on U.S. pork and has put up a slew of trade barriers in violation of WTO rules.
She says NPPC also filed a petition asking that the U.S. revoke or reduce Thailand’s preferential access to the U.S.
Zieba says the feed additive ractopamin has been designated as a safe product by both the Food and Drug Administration and the World Codex group and is accepted by most countries without any restrictions. She says Thailand needs to remove that barrier.
Following the NPPC petition, the U.S. Trade Representative’s office agreed to review Thailand’s eligibility for the U.S. generalized system of preference program.
