The National Pork Producers along with 70 other agricultural and food groups are urging Congress to quickly introduce and approve legislation authorizing Trade Promotion Authority. That fast track authority allows the President to negotiate trade deals with just an up or down vote of Congress. NPPC’s Dave Warner says exports are critical to the country’s economy and major trade deals can’t go through without TPA.
Warner says it won’t be easy to get a TPA measure through Congress because there’s a lot of misinformation out there about the authority and what it does and doesn’t do.
He says whatever final trade agreement is worked out is brought before Congress. Warner says agriculture is the only sector of the U.S. economy that has a trade surplus now and without TPA that could be negatively affected.
