Last week the Trump administration notified Congress it intends to modernize the North American Free Trade agreement. National Pork Producers Council leaders would like to see NAFTA modernized but doesn’t want pork exports disrupted. Dave Warner with NPPC says there’s quite a bit of U.S. pork that’s sold to both Canada and Mexico.
He says as NAFTA is renegotiated the Trump administration needs to keep in mind there’s three way trade flowing well between the U.S., Canada and Mexico that shouldn’t be meddled with.
Warner says since NAFTA has worked so well, modernizing it to bring it up to speed with developments that have happened since it was first negotiated is the best route to go.
Warner notes that since NAFTA first went into effect in 1994, U.S. trade north and south of the border has more than tripled growing more rapidly than U.S. trade with the rest of the world.
