The World Health Organization recently called for a ban on preventative antibiotic use in livestock to address antimicrobial resistance. However, America’s pork producers are making progress in their stewardship of antibiotic use for the health of their animals. That’s according to Dr. Heather Fowler, National Pork Board’s Director of Producer and Public Health.
She says the WHO’s recommendation is concerning. Fowler says antibiotics are an important tool that allows veterinarians and producers to protect the health of their animals.
Fowler says ongoing collaboration with academia, governmental agencies and non-government groups is the best way to solve the complex global issue of antibiotic resistance.
Fowler says the Pork Checkoff has invested more than $6 million in antibiotic related studies since 2000.
