WATERTOWN, SD – Watertown will have one fewer elementary school beginning next fall.
At Monday night’s Watertown School Board meeting, the board voted to close Roosevelt Elementary at the end of the current academic year.
The school board has been studying the issue for months, as enrollment levels among elementary age students in the district have declined.
State statute requires a school district to notify patrons of a school’s closure by December 1st of the preceeding school year.
The Watertown School District will bring forward a plan in the coming months on where Roosevelt Elementary students will attend school in the future.
In a statement, Superintendent Jeff Danielsen said, “Roosevelt Elementary has long served the community in educating students. It has lived up to the namesake and produced resilient students and staff. We are committed to making sure that our students and staff members currently at Roosevelt are cared for as we move through this transition time in the next year.”
