The presidents of Iowa State University and the University of Iowa say tuition hikes are necessary for the fall semester because legislators didn’t provide as much state taxpayer support as the schools requested.
Iowa State University president Steven Leath addressed the Board of Regents over a recommended three-hundred-dollar increase in fall tuition rates for students who are Iowa residents.
University of Iowa president Bruce Harreld says failing to increase tuition rates now will be “damaging to students in the long run” because it’s become increasingly difficult to hire and keep faculty.
Harreld says tuition at the University of Iowa is “under priced” today.
Out-of-state students’ at all three institutions would face higher tuition rates this fall under the proposal. A final decision will be made at the board’s July meeting.
