Northwestern shot a final round of 293 to claim the 2015-16 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Golf Championships with a four round total of 1197.
The Red Raiders tied for the second low round of the day at the fourth and final qualifier of the GPAC Men’s Golf season in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, at Two Rivers Golf Club.
Northwestern won both of the fall qualifiers to build and hang on to the lead. In the overall team standings Midland finished second with a 72-hole total of 1209 while Doane and Morningside tied for third with a total of 1214. Dakota Wesleyan rounded out the the overall top five at 1223. Hastings, who had the low round of the day at GPAC Qualifier #4 (291) finished sixth.
Renen Sahr of Midland was the overall championship and GPAC Player-of-the Year honors with a four round total of 290 (76-70-75-70). Ferran Cortilla of Morningside was runner-up with a 291. Mack Alspaugh of Doane (295), Tom Hogg of Dakota Wesleyan (298) and Just Kraft of Northwestern (299) rounded out the top five respectively.
On the day it was a tight race, Sahr was one of five players to card a low round of 70 at Two Rivers GC. Matt Unruh of Nebraska Wesleyan, Nolan Zikas of Concordia, Cameron Bargell of Hastings, and Cortilla of Morningside all shared in the even par round.
Northwestern advances to the 65th Annual NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships on May 24-27, 2016 at TPC Deer Run, Moline, Illinois. Sahr, the GPAC medalist, will also advance to the championships.
