North Dakota Farmers Union member are monitoring measures working their way through the state legislature. NDFU President Mark Watne says one issue involves more than one bill looking at adjustments or doing away with the farm home exemption. He says his group supports keeping that in place.

He says the farm home exemption is an important protection for working and retired producers who without it would be penalized twice by taxes.

Watne says the other measure they’re keeping an eye on and want to make sure it doesn’t pass is a measure to add second cousins to the corporate farm exemption.

Watne says lawmakers need to concentrate more on ways to provide more economic opportunities for beginning farmers and ranchers rather than messing with the corporate farm law.
