Farmers in five states including North Dakota are trying to get going on spring planting and are running into a fertilizer shortage. State Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says it’s not only anhydrous that’s lacking, it’s all kinds of fertilizers. He says because North Dakota and four other states have been delayed in their seeding, its impacted fertilizer supplies.
He asked North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum for a temporary waiver of hours of service restrictions for commercial drivers trying to move fertilizer in a shorter time frame and that waiver was granted.
Goehring advices growers who are having difficulty getting enough fertilizer to complete their planting to consider switching to a different crop for a time or applying later when product becomes more available.
The temporary waiver of hours of service restriction in North Dakota remains in effect through May 30.
