African Swine Fever which was first detected in China in August has now killed 1 million pigs. That’s prompted Chinese authorities to restrict shipments of most of China’s 700 million swine. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says the amount of Chinese pigs that have died from ASF while a large amount pales in comparison to how many pigs are produced in the United States.
He says the U.S., Mexico and Canada are all working together on their efforts to prevent African Swine Fever from ever getting into North America.
Juhnke says China is the number one consumer of pork so getting a resolution to the trade war would help us get more U.S. pork into China.
Juhnke says their meeting with President Trump is just ahead of his meeting with China’s President at the G20 Summit.
