The North American Meat Institute has filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 12. NAMI Senior Vice President of Regulatory and Scientific Affairs and General Counsel Mark Dopp says proposition 12 establishes space requirements for sows and veal calves which are unrealistic.

The sow requirement goes into effect January 1 of 2022. Dopp says the California law also prohibits sale of meat from animals not raised under their space regulations.

He says NAMI’s lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California says Proposition 12 violates the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Dopp says they’re also asking the court to issue a preliminary injunction to stop Prop 12 from going into effect.
