Governor Dennis Daugaard announced today that he will not call a special session of the South Dakota State Legislature to address the expansion of Medicaid.
Daugaard says “We have a good plan that would increase healthcare access at no additional state cost and guarantee that the federal government won’t shift its responsibility to pay for Native American healthcare to the state.”
The Governor says many legislators wanted more time to study the issue, and wait until after the Presidential election to consider it.
Senator Bernie Hunhoff of Yankton, a strong supporter of expansion, says it is a major loss for the people in the state…..
Hunhoff, a democrat, says there was bi-partisan support for the proposal…..
Hunhoff says he believes the opponents are on the wrong side of history…..
Hunhoff is a member of the task force that has been working through details of the expansion proposal.
