Last week the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing to review trade agreements. National Milk Producer Federation leaders spoke to the panel and said the Trans-Atlantic Trade Investment and Partnership Talks are not on track for a successful market opening conclusion. Federation’s Chris Galen says there are many sticking points including the E.U.’s refusal to negotiate geographical indications or common food names.
He says the European Union is also throwing up what they consider to be trade barriers. Galen says most of those E.U. concerns are misplaced.
Galen says it may be difficult to complete the TTIP this year but cautions it shouldn’t be done too quickly without addressing key ag and dairy concerns.
Galen says his group is very concerned about the lack of progress in the TTIP negotiations so far.
