The National Milk Producers Federation is asking FDA and California state regulators to take enforcement action against a plant-based food company for selling imitation yogurt and labeling it as a dairy product. The outcome could set a precedent for the entire dairy industry. The Federation’s Chris Galen says Kite Hill’s mislabeling of an imitation product violates the federal definition for dairy foods and fails to provide the same nutrition as real yogurt.
Galen says because the Kite Hill Yogurt is nut based it doesn’t have any of the beneficial nutrients provided in real dairy products.
He says the industry is also pushing for passage of the Dairy Pride Act in Congress to address the false dairy labeling issue.
Galen says if the mislabeling issues isn’t resolved, it will hurt dairy producers and consumers.
