The James River Water Development District Board will consider a funding request from the US Geological Survey for a real-time nitrate monitoring station on the river.
Executive Director Dave Bartel says they want to develop a base line for any nitrates in the river…
Most nitrates that end up in streams originate from nitrogen applied to farm fields, and animal run off.
Bartel says they want to see if control programs are working….
Bartel says they have never heard of any nitrate related problems with the James River…
The monitoring station would be placed with the USGS flood gage in Yankton County.
The Board will meet Wednesday in Pierre.
