South Dakota sophomore Chris Nilsen has been named the Summit League’s May/June Athlete of the Month as announced by the league office on Friday. Nilsen extends his own Summit League record to eight monthly awards.

The awards continue to roll in for Nilsen, who claimed his second NCAA Championship in the pole vault earlier this month. The sophomore vaulted 19 feet, 1 ½ inches, to break a 22-year-old NCAA Championships meet record. Nilsen became the third Summit League athlete to win a pair of national titles.

Nilsen vaulted over the 19-foot barrier at all three meets in May and June. He broke the Summit League Championships meet record by nearly a foot to win in 19-0 ¼.
