NFU Sees Possible Rail Merger As Concentration Problem

Ag Concentration issues along with consolidations and mergers remain one of the major concerns for National Farmers Union members. NFU President Rob Larew says the recent bidding for acquisition of the Kansas City Southern Railway concerns their members about expected increasing shipping costs for farmers and ranchers going forward if this merger is allowed.

He says recent events such as with the COVID 19 pandemic have turned attention to consolidation issues.

Larew says what’s positive is that other ag groups are starting to see the problems brought on by heavy concentration and consolidations and are starting to weigh in with their concerns.

Both Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railroad have been bidding to acquire the Kansas City Southern Railway.
