The Trump administration’s Harvest Box idea to replace the Supplemental Nutrition Program’s food stamps with prepackaged boxes of groceries isn’t likely to succeed. That’s according to National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson who says the Harvest Boxes which contain cereal, pasta, canned fruit and meat isn’t very healthy.

The administration says cutting down on cash payments and substituting them with Harvest Boxes of food would save $ 129 billion over ten years. Johnson doesn’t see that as realistic.

He says putting in Harvest Boxes just adds to government bureaucracy which is against the philosophy exhibited by the Trump administration on a number of other issues.

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue has been touting the idea to Grocers. He says they’re already adding the delivery services that the Harvest Box would require.
