National Farmers Union members are opposing a proposed rule by the Trump administration to require able bodied adults without dependents to meet work requirements for receiving SNAP benefits. NFU President Roger Johnson says the work requirement issue was settled during the farm bill debate and it should be up to Congress to decide that issue.

He says having more stricter work requirement rules that the administration is proposing is the wrong thing to do.

Johnson says one of the problem with the able bodied work rules is that often times training is required.

He says because those people needing the training are scattered all over the place the costs for training them becomes cost prohibitive and more expensive than just doling out the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance benefits.
