U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development has formalized an agreement to aid Americans fighting the opioid epidemic. A non profit group will purchase homes from the Department and convert them to transitional housing for people recovering from opioid misuse. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says that’s welcome news for Rural Americans where the crisis is being felt the most.

He says the impacts of the opioid epidemic are increasing and one of the most startling statistics is that U.S life expectancy is now moving downward rather than upward.

Johnson says the losses both economic and human from opioid abuse are skyrocketing.

Johnson says anyone needing resource help to battle the opioid problem can go to the farm town strong website. He says there’s also a link that can be accessed by going to the Farmers Union website at NFU.org.
